Medical Billing and Coding

A medical biller or coder is responsible for the accurate and timely submission of technical or professional medical claims to insurance companies. The position may be located in physician offices, hospitals, nursing homes, or other healthcare facilities.  Your occupational duties may include obtaining referrals and pre-authorizations as required for procedures, checking eligibility and benefits verification for treatments, hospitalizations, and procedures, reviewing patient bills for accuracy and completeness, and obtaining any missing information, preparing, reviewing, and transmitting claims using billing software, including electronic and paper claim processing, calling insurance companies regarding any discrepancy in payments if necessary.  This job includes updating billing software with rate changes, updating cash spreadsheets, and running collection reports. In addition to these general duties, an individual employer may request the performance of other duties that fit with additional training and background experience to provide further competency for new duties. The future of jobs in this career path displays a promising outlook.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that medical record and health information jobs are due to increase by 13% in the years between 2016 and 2026, which is higher than the national average for other career choices.
